Principal investigators
The Laboratory of Virus Evolution (LoVE), led by Professor Gavin Smith and Associate Prof Yvonne Su, investigates how RNA viruses emerge, evolve and spread through time and across different geographic regions, with a particular focus on influenza viruses, coronaviruses, human parainfluenza and zoonotic viruses.
We study the emergence and evolution of rapidly evolving RNA viruses in various host species. We specialize in utilizing cutting-edge metagenomic and phylogenetics strategies to understand what sparks disease outbreaks and transmission. We apply an interdisciplinary One Health approach to conduct fieldwork disease surveillance across Asia, with the vision to detect emerging zoonotic diseases and evaluate their risks at the animal-human-environment interface.
